JOB ANNOUNCEMENT 

JOB TITLE: Flexible Learning Paraeducator (2 Positions)

School: Chimacum Junior Senior High	School Year: 2023-24
Reports to: Special Services	Bargaining Unit: CIA
Days Per Year: 180	Hours Per Day: 6.5
Start Time: 7:30 AM	End Time: 2:30 PM
Wage Range (Salaries are stated as an estimate only. Actual salary is confirmed only upon hire/job offer.) $19.91 - $22.69/Per Hour; DOE

Note: Employees are paid the last working day of each month.

 

Position Summary 

Assist teachers with individualized and small group instruction for students of all educational levels who have physical or behavioral needs or are medically fragile. Support student’s special health care needs and develop daily living and behavioral skills. Assist staff with classroom preparation and retrieval, use and storage of equipment and supplies. May supervise and assist students in library, classrooms, resource rooms, playgrounds, crosswalks, hallways or getting on and off a bus. May be assigned to an individual student and matriculate with the student until education is completed.

 

Supervision and Controls over the Work

The employee works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of a designated school administrator. The employee’s work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, provisions of Washington Administrative Code and Revised Code of Washington, direction of the supervisor, and performance standards and expectations as set forth in the collective bargaining agreement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Work with students with special needs.
• Assists student(s) working on assignments and projects with organizational skills, restating directions or explaining concepts.
• Provides physical assistance for student(s) when necessary to complete task or assignment.
• Encourage and assist student(s) participation in learning, helping to maintain focus on assignments.
• Assist student(s) with motivation, behavior management, and positive verbal communication.
• Model appropriate social skills, and redirect student(s) behavior as needed.
• Provide for the physical, health and safety needs of students, which may include maneuvering student(s), standard feeding, toileting, diapering, restraint, de-escalation, getting on and off a bus, implementing behavior plans as appropriate, and teaching independent living skills.
• Provide delegated physical care and procedures under supervision of registered nurse in accordance with state law, which may include tube feeding, catheterization, or administering medication.
• Assist classroom teachers / special education teachers / special education specialists in the implementation of student IEPs.
• Enter data as needed, research information, document attendance, prepare and document communication to parents under the direct supervision of the teacher, and access email via computer.
• Models appropriate behavior for students.
• Assists other personnel as may be requested.
• Manages student(s) during simulated or actual emergency crisis (fire alarm, medical emergency, lockdown, etc.) in building.
• Maintains strict confidentiality of student information.
• Ability to communicate essential oral or written information to parents, students and colleagues in fluent English.
• Basic knowledge of computers.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and community.
• Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students and providing a positive environment.
• Adhere to and support board policy, school guidelines, administrative rules and directives.
• Punctuality and job presence.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Demonstrate positive student management strategies that promote student success.
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others to promote a positive environment.
• Demonstrated proficiency in math, reading, and oral /written language skills.
• Demonstrated qualities of adaptability, dependability, humor, and tolerance.
• Demonstrated ability to carry out the work assignment with minimal supervision.
• Commitment to professional growth.
• Demonstrated willingness to accept feedback related to job performance improvement.
• Meet Title 1 requirements for highly qualified (pass exam or have 72 college credit hours).

Additional Job Information

This position may be combined with other assignments depending on qualifications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, move about, hear and speak, and be visually observant of classroom behavior and learning activities.

 

The employee may occasionally lift, restrain, or move up to 100 pounds – most typically when required to intervene in student safety issues.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.

 

The employee may be required to travel on school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
