$ 27.48 – 29.94/ per hour

Note: Employees are paid the last working day of each month.

Job Objective

The Day Custodian provides custodial and facility support services to maintain a safe, clean, sanitary, and welcoming school environment during the instructional day. This position performs routine and responsive cleaning duties, supports student and staff safety needs, assists with building security, and provides operational support for school programs and events.

 


 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Custodial Cleaning & Sanitation

 

  • Vacuum carpets, spot clean stains, and use carpet extractors as needed.
    Sweep, dry mop, and wet mop floors in classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, and common areas.
  • Operate floor scrubbers, buffers, and other custodial equipment for routine and deep cleaning.
    Empty trash and recycling receptacles.
  • Sanitize restrooms, drinking fountains, high-touch surfaces, and replenish supplies.
  • Conduct mid-day restroom checks and refresh supplies as needed.
  • Student-Focused & Daytime Operational Support
  • Respond immediately to spills, student accidents, illness incidents, and broken items during the school day.
  • Clean and disinfect bodily fluids in accordance with district procedures and bloodborne pathogen standards.
  • Secure and isolate hazardous areas (e.g., broken glass, liquid spills) until properly restored.
  • Maintain cafeteria and high-traffic areas during lunch periods, including setup, turnover, spill response, and cleanup.
  • Provide timely custodial support to teachers and staff during instructional hours.
  • Maintain visible presence during the school day to support a safe and welcoming environment.


Building Security & Operational Support

 

  • Unlock and lock doors; manage lighting and security systems as assigned.
  • Ensure entrances and exits remain safe and clean.
  • Report safety hazards, building damage, and maintenance needs; submit work and supply requests.
  • Assist with school events including setup and teardown.

Basic Maintenance & Support

 

  • Perform minor maintenance tasks within skill level (furniture repair, painting, ceiling tiles, minor plumbing, etc.).
  • Assist with furniture moving, room reconfiguration, and equipment setup.
  • Perform limited exterior cleaning and debris removal as assigned.

 

Compliance & Safety

 

  • Follow chemical handling procedures and injury prevention program requirements.
  • Immediately report incidents involving student safety or concerns to Building Administrator.
  • Adhere to board policy, school guidelines, and administrative procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License and ability to maintain insurable status.
  • Ability to safely use custodial equipment and cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to calculate proper chemical dilution ratios.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Prior custodial experience preferred.
  • Ability to safely work on ladders (6–8 feet).

Dust mop, Wet Mop, floor scrubbers, Wet Vac, Carpet Extractor, vacuum (backpack style), rags, cart, hand truck, desk/table mover, ladders, pressure washer, handheld radio/ phone

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, move about, hear, and speak, and be visually observant of classroom behavior and learning activities. The employee may occasionally lift, restrain, or move up to 100 pounds – most typically when required to intervene in student safety issues.

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.

 

Performance Evaluation

Performance is evaluated in accordance with district policy and the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
